What is a Door/Window Contact?

Alarm Contacts
Used for Perimeter Protection!

Door/window alarm contacts are magnetic sensors that are installed on doors and windows to detect opening and closing. They are designed to be part of an alarm system, and work by sending a signal to the alarm control panel when the magnetic field between the two pieces of the contact is broken. When the door or window is closed, the magnet and sensor meet to complete the circuit. If someone tries to open the door or window, the magnet and sensor are separated, which breaks the circuit and triggers the alarm.

The main difference between a wired door/window contacts and a wireless door/window alarm contacts is that a wired contact requires direct physical wires to connect it to the alarm panel, while a wireless contact uses radio-frequency signals to communicate with a wireless receiver that is connected to the alarm panel. Wired contacts are typically more reliable because they have a direct, physical connection to the alarm panel and are not subject to interference from other devices. However, installing wired contacts can be more challenging, requiring drilling and running wires through walls and ceilings. Wireless contacts, on the other hand, are easier to install because they do not require any drilling or running of wires. They can be placed anywhere within range of the wireless receiver and are typically less expensive than wired contacts. However, wireless contacts can be susceptible to interference from other wireless devices and can sometimes experience signal range issues, which can affect their reliability.

Alarm contacts are an important part of perimeter protection for homes and businesses. They provide a proactive security solution by detecting and alerting homeowners or business owners when someone enters or exits through an entryway that is being monitored. They are usually installed on all entry points such as doors and windows to beep, sound an alarm, or send an alert to the GeoArm monitoring center when the door or window is opened. While other types of security devices such as motion detectors and security cameras can supplement perimeter protection, door/window contacts help establish a "first line of defense" by preventing intruders from entering a building undetected.
